Default The Showdown: Kanye Vs. 50 - Whch did you buy?

50 Cent: Taking Care of Business

He has said that he will retire if Kanye West sells more records than him. He has also said that he would like to challenge West to a televised debate. And he has argued that nearly all of the current interest accorded West is entirely owed to him. He has a showman's flair in moments like this, Don King meets Muhammad Ali, selling a spectacle, drumming up business, popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy, come one, come all. His words will bring the masses. That's what hustlers do, and that's what hustlers know. And 50 Cent, above all else, is a hustler, one that mastered the fine art of speaking in intoxicating sound bites long before publicists were paid to be in the picture. Sometimes those bites feel scripted, other times they feel spontaneous. But they are seldom boring. Like when 50 Cent laughs and says of his rivalry with West, "I'm King Kong. Kanye is human. Humans run when they see King Kong, because they're scared." Though his face betrays no emotion, you can feel him thinking, "Are you entertained!!!"

That is one side of 50 Cent: combative, funny, brilliant. The artist whose career sparked with "How to Rob" -- a single about redistributing the wealth of other rappers into his pockets -- and continued to flame brightly after several street-beloved mix tapes and publicized battles with everyone from Ja Rule to Cam'ron. But there is another side of 50 Cent: the businessman. As the man born Curtis Jackson lounges on an oversize leather couch in his sparsely decorated Manhattan office, having already finished three meetings by midday, this is the side that emerges the more he talks about why he's so resolute, so unwaveringly convinced that his new album, Curtis, will move more copies than West's Graduation come September 11th, the day both are released.

"My first album was the highest-selling LP of 2003," he says, pointing to the fact that 2003's Get Rich or Die Tryin' moved more than 800,000 copies in the four days after it dropped. He goes on to note that his follow-up, The Massacre, was the second-highest-selling album of 2005. "That album sold something like 1.14 million in four days. Jay-Z's last album sold something like 1.6 total. Kanye works for Jay-Z. Kanye is a worker bee. He's never been able to generate a fraction of the interest that I have."

Vs.

Kanye: A Genius in Praise of Himself

It's the wee hours of a Monday night in London, and inside Stringfellows strip club, about a dozen scantily clad women form a rough semicircle around Kanye West and his small entourage. The girls let him know that for just one twenty-pound note (about forty dollars), they will drop their knickers and gyrate in his face for the length of one song, and while I contemplate how low the U.S. dollar has plummeted, West scans the room and kicks back on a couch, armed with a stack of bills.

Over the next few hours, he hardly moves an inch. The strip-club environment seems to have tranquilized him. For someone who travels through life at hyperspeed and talks a mile a minute, West is unusually still and silent. Inside these walls, during this brief moment, he is able to pleasantly disconnect himself from the hoopla surrounding his new album, Graduation, and his impending showdown with 50 Cent at the record stores.

Graduation is West's third album. In 2004, as a pink-Polo-wearing preppy with a positive message, the Chicago native broke though with The College Dropout, netting three Grammys, including one for his song "Jesus Walks," which contemplated his relationship with God, and another for his skilled production work behind the Alicia Keys hit "You Don't Know My Name." In 2005, he branched out with Late Registration, the five-star album on which he collaborated with producer Jon Brion. Over the years, West has become a lightning rod for controversy, not only for his highly un-hip-hop fashion sense (which could be described as metrosexual) but also for braggadocio and unfiltered outspokenness regarding the ills of society.

Famously, West complained to reporters backstage at the 2004 American Music Awards after country singer Gretchen Wilson won for Best New Artist, expressed his outrage at the rampant homophobia in hip-hop and, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, declared that George Bush doesn't care about black people. Aside from the rare fashion faux pas -- he'd like to forget that he showed up at the Grammys last year in a lavender tuxedo/white-glove combo -- it is usually West's mouth that lands him in pop-culture purgatory. And last November, after he stormed the stage to protest a Best Video victory by dance-music tag team Justice and Simian at MTV's European Music Awards, he watched his approval ratings plummet. "When I saw it on MSN the next day, it looks like I went into an orphanage and bit a baby's head off," says West, who obsessively monitors his image via blogs and other Internet sites. "I felt like the Earth was on top of me."

thats classified information only myspace websites can tell you

but here

Preorder numbers are in for the 50 Cent Curtis & Kanye West Graduation albums and 50’s ahead by almost 20,000 units. As smaller stores have put the album on sale before the official street date & preorders through the major chains closing out over the weekend, the tentative buzz on first week numbers has arrived and show 50 Cent ahead by a slim but notable number over Kanye West.
