Default New Pastor Troy Interview For Those Who Care

WordofSouth.com: There have been rumors that you have signed to Cash Money. Is there any truth to this rumor?

Pastor Troy: Nah nah nah, them my homeboys man, we just talk a little business here and there, but there’s nothing official.

WordofSouth.com: What are you working on these days?

Pastor Troy: I got a new joint coming out July 3rd called “Saddam Hussein.” I’m bombing on these niggas; I’m bombing on them like Sadaam.

WordofSouth.com: Who do you have on the album for production?

Pastor Troy: I got my production team on deck from DJ Squeeky to Drummer Boy to Shawty Red. I’m good with this shit. You know DJ Squeeky been doing this shit since I was a fan of this whole shit, so I feel good with the shit I got.

WordofSouth.com: Do you still produce?

Pastor Troy: Yeah, but it’s so simple to find a tight ass track that you like and jump on that bitch man, it’s so simple. Making beats is a little time consuming, but I got something on the new joint though, I got a couple, and they gonna love that shit.

WordofSouth.com: Who do you have on the album feature wise?

Pastor Troy: I got Gangsta Boo, Fabo, Hitman Sammy Sam, the original ATL legend. I ain’t playing with these suckas man. I’m coming with this straight gutter hard shit, none of that fuck punk shit.

WordofSouth.com: What do you mean by punk shit?

Pastor Troy: Soft shit, niggas who can’t back it up and everybody already know we wit it. We ain’t bout that talking, this shit is for real.

WordofSouth.com: I see that you and Sammy Sam patched up your differences.

Pastor Troy: Yeah man, we patched that shit up like how we supposed to. This shit is so gangsta that it’s uncalled for. Sammy on that joint clowning with me and we sound good together.

WordofSouth.com: Tell me about some of the tracks from the new album.

Pastor Troy: “Saddam Hussein” the track so hard, I’m rapping so fast that its gon’ have niggas straight kicking themselves over this. I got a track with Gangsta Boo that’s on that old “Late Night Tip” beat. I rap my couple of verses and then Boo come in and killed that joint. She started with the lines from her original verse and it just sounds crazy. It’s a full ride out album where you put it in and let it go. It’s in order and you ain’t gotta skip around on it or nothing.

WordofSouth.com: What track is going to be the single?

Pastor Troy: That joint called CLICK TO LISTEN“That’s The Move” produced by my boy Zaytoven. It’s a straight Chevy riding, straight Chevy song breaking out for the summer. The joint coming out July 3rd, so everyone gonna be letting the clubs out for the 4th and shit with that CLICK TO LISTEN“That’s The Move.” We are shooting a video for it down here on Mother’s Day.

WordofSouth.com: Dropping those two albums last year, did you have majors calling you up?

Pastor Troy: I don’t really entertain them, I don’t want a major deal, and I can do that shit anytime I want to. I’m tight on this independent tip man. We sold 100,000 cd’s last year between the two and I ain’t even promote them joints. We keep grindin’ and doing this independent grind. We are trying to sell 1-200,000 of this joint here.

WordofSouth.com: I read in interviews that you wanted to go platinum. Is that still something that you want to do?

Pastor Troy: It don’t even bother me because I got platinum money.

WordofSouth.com: What do you mean by that exactly?

Pastor Troy: Just seeing the money that you can make doing it independently. You might sell 300,000 on a major and be in the hole, but I sell 300,000 down here independent and its gravy. It depends on what you want out the situation. I’m on some gangsta shit man. We trying to get paid and live life. I ain’t got any obligations to anybody, but myself. We black owned and independent and nobody can’t take that shit from me.

WordofSouth.com: Two cops were recently killed and the blame was put on your song “Murda Man,” what were your initial thoughts when this went down?

Pastor Troy: They just looking for a damn cop out. They just trying to make something make sense. They can’t put that shit together. We sold 75,000 copies of that album, so I don’t know what the hell wrong with his copy. Ain’t nobody else’s fucked, my shit plays regular.

WordofSouth.com: How do you feel about how the media always blames Hip-Hop when violence goes down?

Pastor Troy: I feel, as it’s a big cop out, why aren’t you blaming them or people like movie directors. They need to be looking at the movie industry more than this rap.

WordofSouth.com: Speaking of “Murda Man,” fans on my message board want to know what exactly happened with you and Lil Jon for you to diss him as well as his label?

Pastor Troy: Man Jon was just trippin’; I don’t know I guess success got to his head. The nigga be playing, he’ll say whatever when we in each other’s presence, but give me the cold shoulder the minute a nigga leave. I’m like fuck that shit, so I just rode. I ain’t mean no harm to him or nothing like that, I ain’t wanna kill him or no shit like that. A bunch of shit talkers, a bunch of damn liars, but it’s all good though.

WordofSouth.com: Atlanta hip-hop is at the forefront of southern hip-hop, do you feel that you should have more of an impact today in it?

Pastor Troy: Shit man, I’m eatin’, I’m eatin’, I’m content, but shit I ain’t a hog, I’m an underdog.

WordofSouth.com: I am going to ask you about some songs throughout your career and I want you to tell me what was going on with you at the time when you created it.

Pastor Troy: Aight

WordofSouth.com: “Vica Versa”

Pastor Troy: It really was just a poem from when I was in college. When I got there, I saw how different shit was with me coming from a Christian household having my father as a Pastor. I get up to school and everybody was just playing a game in front of their parents, but then acting a fool on the college scene. I was a bad guy because I was real, but everyone else was just doing things behind everyone back. That’s where the Vica Versa shit came from. The whole world was just different from what I expected it to be.

WordofSouth.com: When you made “Visa Versa,” were you expecting it to be a club banger?

Pastor Troy: This girl was calling me the anti Christ and the devil, so I stayed away from it because I was scared, so I stayed away for a couple of years until I finally ran across the beat and when I heard the beat man, I stayed rapping it. That shit was straight and it was together, so I was like fuck this shit I’m dropping it.

WordofSouth.com: “Crank Me Up”

Pastor Troy: I just liked that rock beat man with guitars and shit like that. Its crazy cause “Party Like A Rockstar” and all that, we been doing that, and that’s what we been damn screaming. It’s so funny because Universal picked them up and I was up at Universal in 1999 and they was telling me that guitars would never work on the radio. With “This Tha City”, they was like the rock guitars wouldn’t work on Hip-Hop and Urban radio and shit like that. I was before my time with that shit.

WordofSouth.com: So when you hear tracks like that being played today that you was doing years back what do you think?

Pastor Troy: I love the rock tracks, but you just gotta be the innovator and stop riding the damn bandwagon.

WordofSouth.com: It doesn’t upset you at all?

Pastor Troy: Hell nah man, it would if I wasn’t eatin’, but I’m still doing me. Ain’t nothing stopping me and we tight. When I made the diss record people thought I was trippin’ on Lil Jon. People was like I said that because Lil Jon doing this and we doing that. We was still doing our shows together and we was on the same ticket, so I don’t know what the hell they was talking about, we eatin! I’m not jealous on no type of shit like that; I already know what time it is.

WordofSouth.com: “No More Play IN GA”

Pastor Troy: I wrote and that joint and I made the beat first. I made the beat, I was listening to it every day, and it was easy because I wrote the lyrics exactly how I wanted it to sound. It was cool man and I was trying to get off the ground with my shit. I was watching the old NO Limit movies and we was trying to get our shit crackin’ from Atlanta , so we cranked it up from there and it worked. That was the first song that I ever did and first time I ever went to the studio. It was crazy man because now we taking it back to the hood letting people hear it and shit. Folks started really looking at me and respecting me as a rapper. It ended up working.

WordofSouth.com: When it made way down to Orlando, people were going crazy.

Pastor Troy: Yeah man I fuck around with my Haitians down there and all that good shit.

WordofSouth.com: As you have grown as an artist over the years what is probably the most important advice that you have received from anybody?

Pastor Troy: Just to sit down with your lawyer and make sure you got your paperwork and all that shit together. Save yourself before it’s too late. I love this shit, I’m in full control, and I’m trying to do 250,000 on one and then drop another one in the 4th quarter.

WordofSouth.com: What is advice that you can offer up and coming independent artists?

Pastor Troy: My best advice is try to do your own thing and do as much as you can. The more control you have over your shit is the more that you can get out of it. You can’t make moves if it ain’t yours.
