Default Google phone - the first review

The T-Mobile G1 is great. The iPhone is better.

Google’s problem with its first foray into mobile phones was always going to be that Apple’s iPhone had set the bar impossibly high in terms of design and innovation. The G1 has fast internet access? Old hat. Touchscreen? Been there, done that. You can download hundreds of applications? Already bought the T-shirt.

But, as the company are keen to stress, this is not a Google phone per se. Google did not make it – it is manufactured by Taiwanese firm HTC, and is available exclusively on the T-Mobile network.

But the branding is clear. Instead of the manufacturer's name on the back on the phone, it reads “with Google”. It’s also called the G1. It is Google’s brand and reputation that will be enhanced – or dented – by the success of this phone.

The device itself does have some nice new features which will make it attractive to many. Its main plus points are that the G1 happily steals the best features of the iPhone and Blackberry - two of the best smart phones on the market. It has the easy-to-navigate and intuitive touchscreen, like the iPhone. But like the Blackberry it also has a has qwerty keyboard, which slides out, and a “trackball” which helps you navigate around the screen. The combination of these features works well.

The G1 was never intended to take on the iPhone’s sleek design, as the focus was always on better functionality. And first impressions are that the G1 is easy to use. Even so, at first glance, you feel that more could have been done to make this a beautiful looking gadget. It feels and looks plastic and clunky. Choosing the G1 over the iPhone is the equivalent of choosing comfortable slippers over designer shoes. I know which I’d prefer to show off to my friends.

More significant than the phone itself is the fact that the G1 is the first ever mobile that runs on Google’s new operating system for mobile phones, Android. Google’s influence over the phone here is obvious, with the G1 proving access to Google’s online applications at the touch of a button. These applications include Gmail, the personal email service, Google maps, its digital mapping service, and YouTube.

The phone also gives access to the “Android Market” from which you can download hundreds of applications – from better GPS systems to new games – which have been made independently by developers. Google will not try to control this market. Anyone can create an application for it, and anyone will be able to download from it.

It’s far too early to say whether this “open source” way to creating the software that runs the phone will allow Google to dominate mobile phones in the same way it already dominates the internet. But if that’s the aim, the G1 is not a bad start.
