Default question on burner

How long does a burner usually last? I've been getting crappy burns lately. When I play the cd, the songs sound like they're 'clipping', kinda sounds like skipping, but not as long, and there is no break in the sound. Plus I know it's not skipping, i get the same result in different players.
Any help is appreciated. Heres the situation.

-i'm making wav. cd's
-was using nero6, changed to nero 7 cause i thought it was the prog, but i get the same result burning with win media 10
-same clipping when burning at 4, 8x, 16x
-clipping is only in the first 30 secs. of the track, maybe every 10 secs or so. the rest of the track is fine.
- i use sony CD-R's
-computer is about 13 months old, firewalled, ad-aware run and updated regularly
defragged (daily), and disk clean uped (daily). i have no problems switching between windows (like using different programs simultaneously.)
-currently the (40 gig) HD is saying i have 15 gigs free space (40 % free)
-i would approximate about 200 cd's burnt on this burner so far.

-i have a compaq presario 2200 (yeah i know its not the best)
-win xp
-Celeron M processor, 1.40 GHz, 480 RAM, 40 Gig HD
-Phillips CDRW/DVD CDD 5263

try burning at slower speeds......

and cd burners usualy last for about 700 - 850 burns (cd's that is)...
